RoHS (Restriction of the use of Certain Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment) is an EU directive which has been turned into law in most EU member states, and which stipulates that all applicable products must be compliant by 1 July 2006. The RoHS Regulations ban the placing on the EU market of products containing more than the set levels of lead, cadmium, mercury, and other hazardous materials. The effect of RoHS is that products that do not conform cannot legally be sold in the EU after 1 July 2006.

RoHS does not apply outside the EU, though some US states and some other countries are likely to adopt similar regulations in the future.

The directive calling for the safe disposal and/or recycling of Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment at the end of its life is generally referred to as the WEEE directive.

All Magicard ID card printers are now produced in a WEEE & RoHS compliant form well before the 1 July 2006 deadline.
